Vale, Barry Ernest Hickson ........ 24/07/1937 - 16/07/2021
Barry Hickson's daughters Jenny and Virginia have advised the following regarding Barry's funeral arrangements.
“Because of the Covid situation and lockdowns we have decided to have Dad privately cremated and will hold a celebration of his life at a later date when we can all gather together, family and friends, and give him a send off according to his wishes. We appreciate everyone's messages and thoughts. It's heartwarming to know how much he was loved by his friends.”

Barry was a founding member of MATAMA....
In 1996 he and a small group of similarly interested tractor folk got together at the annual Eurobodalla Agricultural Show and put the wheels in motion to form MATAMA.
In the quarter of a century since, he continuously & passionately held the office of either President or Secretary of this Association. Positions that required constant dedication which eventually earned him Life Membership of the club. These positions required him to liaise with NHMA officials, Shire Council members, other clubs, insurers etc etc. All jobs he did very well. Many of the older members will remember that several years ago Barry guided the club through a very difficult time.
He rubbed shoulders with all the truly dedicated people throughout the hobby and was once formally declared a “Legend of the Vintage Machinery Movement”. Around 2 decades ago, with his David Brown, he participated in the Guinness Book of Records “Plough and be Counted” successful world record ploughing attempt at Yass.
Barry was seen regularly and often at local club outings, at shows and displays with his International Tractor and his Wolseley Stationary Engine. He loved these days out socialising with his mates, other club members and especially promoting the hobby and the club to the general public. He would also travel to distant towns to take part in bigger rallies.
More recently he took an active role in resurrecting the club following its devastation from the New Years Eve bushfire that wiped out all of its equipment and assets.
But Barry’s interests extended much further than just Vintage Machinery.
In his younger days he was a very competitive Motor Racer, competing in Touring car racing and especially Formula Vee racing. More recently he was a very keen V8 Supercars spectator and especially Formula One watcher, keeping a close eye on the direction of the sport and the progress of the Aussies, like Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo.
Another thing that had kept his interest was “Warhammer” and “Wings of War” wargaming. He was an active member of the Moruya Marauders, attending regular war games with other mates and members of that group.
His modelling was another thing he excelled at. His hands might have been old, but they were steady and some of his creations are fabulous. Vintage fighter and bomber aircraft from WW1 mostly. He would spend hours with old Warbirds. He often visited the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Nowra and the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society(HARS) at Albion Park, in order to research his modelling and to increase his knowledge of the exhibits.
He loved his Kindle. He was very well read, loving everything from fantasy fiction to history, ancient and modern. Australian folklore and Bush Poetry, especially Banjo Patterson, Henry Lawson and C.J. Dennis. Not forgetting Reference books, his thirst for knowledge was insatiable.
His other interests extended to Country Music, Military History, Vintage Films, Manly Sea Eagles, Science Fiction, Good wine, and much, much more.
He was a very well respected man, a really decent, clean living man, who will be greatly missed.

Our heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to his daughters Virginia and Jenny and their families...
