Marlene Bronwyn Hartwig
22/1/1957 - 13/3/2014
If its possible for a club to have one, then Marlene was this clubs Matriarch.
Recently, Marlene lost her battle with cancer.
For many years, she and her husband Dave were regularly seen together at rallies and other vintage machinery related events and it was at those events where her hospitality and generosity became legendary throughout the vintage machinery movement.
Whenever this club put on a display, Marlene was always there, offering an endless supply of culinary delights such as home made cakes, slices, biscuits, tea and coffee to club-members and other folk, on the rally ground.
When visiting the Hartwigs, the kettle was always boiling and there was no better place to be, than near Marlene when she had that slow combustion stove cranked up and she was wielding her magic.
Her Date and Walnut rolls..........delicious!
Before moving to Tomakin, Marlene & Dave lived in Queanbeyan and Marlene ran the DoD Russel Offices registry. They were very active members of the Canberra Historic Engine Club and even back then, Marlene was well known throughout the vintage machinery movement and her pampering of fellow rally-ers was already legendary.
Regional Agricultural Shows always saw Marlene's home made produce winning bulk prizes and for many years she ran a stall at the Bungendore markets, selling her award winning jams, chutneys, cakes and other handicrafts.
Her Lemon Butter.........sigh!

In club affairs, her no-nonsense approach to just about everything meant that her opinions on club matters, really mattered and a lot of decisions were made on her sound advice. AND, having very little time for tomfoolery, Marlene was very capable of quickly bringing an unruly meeting to order. With the exception of the WA & TAS events, Marlene accompanied Dave to every NHMA National Rally in the last 20+ years. This dedication to the hobby, extended through regular attendance at regional rallies, such as Bombala, Young and Canberra, local ag shows like Braidwood and Bungendore, and right down to very nearly every local outing our club attended, such as school fete's etc. Always keen to lend a hand, she was often seen greeting other rally-ers at the registration desk of our own biennial "Horse-Power" rally. |
Consequently, she will be missed by far more folk than just the members of this club.
